for neoN (2025)
The work "for neoN" (2025) explores specific tuning systems, overtones, and slow-moving harmonic pulsations, rooted in the tradition of Just Intonation. For the work, a number of new instruments have been built, offering different sonic perspectives on the various pulsating chords. The piece invites a meditative, enveloping, and richly immersive listening experience.
In 2024, Peder and Jo David released their debut album "Spektralmaskin" on Sofa Music, which received widespread critical acclaim in both Norwegian and international press. They have previously staged mechanical sound installations outdoors in Vigelandsparken and in collaboration with Ny Musikk Bergen.
Ensemble neoN has, through their remarkable experimentalism, established themselves as one of the most original groups in today's contemporary music scene. Their debut album "neoN" comprises five works and establishes the ensemble as a significant force on the experimental music scene for years to come. The release features music by Alvin Lucier, Oren Ambarchi & James Rushford, alongside works by the ensemble's own composers Kristine Tjøgersen, Jan Martin Smørdal, and Julian Skar.
Ensemble neoN consists of twelve musicians who work together to redefine the boundaries of contemporary music, often in collaboration with artists across and between different musical forms and expressions. Despite a clear grounding in the modern Western art music tradition, the ensemble transcends any genre definition, drawing on musical impulses and inspiration ranging from improvisation and soundscapes to pop and electronica.
With members experienced in a number of leading Norwegian orchestras and ensembles, Ensemble neoN has already achieved considerable recognition — most notably through the award of the Spellemann Prize for their collaborative album with Susanna Wallumrød, "The Forester".
