Håkon Thelin, Dreng Studio and Jo David Meyer Lysne present excerpts from their most recent work with Skorda, an interactive composition tool for string instruments.

Skorda maps the overtone series directly onto the string. It visualises natural and artificial harmonics, lets you hear the actual sounding frequencies in just intonation, and displays the music in two parallel notations at once: what the instrument sounds, and where the hand physically goes. It is a tool built from the inside of a practice rather than around it — made by composers and players who needed it.

In this presentation the three share material from the current stage of development: musical excerpts written with the tool, demonstrations of how it is used in the compositional process, and reflections on what happens to writing for strings when just intonation stops being a theoretical problem and becomes something you can see and hear while you work.
